The Rookie of the Year award began in 1947 with Jackie Robinson as the first MLB winner. In 1949 the award was expanded to include both an American League rookie and a National League rookie. Rookie eligability for the award was to a player with less than 130 major league at bats for a position player or less than 50 innings pitched for a pitcher or anyone with less than 45 days on a major league roster. The members of the Baseball Writers Association vote on the winners each year.
